Go to Punta Cana between December and April for the most reliable weather, or in late April, May or November for better value with fewer trade-offs. June to October is the cheapest stretch because it is Atlantic hurricane season. Most stays are a week at one all-inclusive resort, which is why a flight and hotel package often makes sense here, as long as you compare it against booking separately.
Punta Cana is the Dominican Republic's main resort coast, on the island's far eastern tip. It is built around all-inclusive resorts and long white-sand beaches, and it is one of the simplest beach trips in the Caribbean to plan, once you have picked the right month.

December to April is the dry high season. Rain is least likely, the trade winds keep the heat manageable, and resorts charge their highest rates, with the Christmas and New Year weeks and the spring-break weeks in March the most expensive and most likely to sell out.
Late April, May and November are the shoulder months. Weather is usually still good, crowds thin out, and prices start to fall. For many travelers this is the best balance on the calendar.
June to October is the cheapest period because it falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs 1 June to 30 November and is most active from mid-August to mid-October. Most days in these months are ordinary hot, humid beach days with short showers, but if you travel then, choose refundable rates where you can and read what your travel insurance actually covers for weather.
Whale season is January to March, when humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay on the north-east coast. It is a long day trip from Punta Cana, so treat it as a full-day excursion rather than a half-day add-on.
Bávaro is the centre of the resort coast, with the largest number of hotels, the long Bávaro and Los Corales beach strip, and the most restaurants and shops within reach of a beach walk.
Cap Cana, just south of the airport, is a gated, upscale development with a marina, golf and quieter beaches. Expect higher prices and fewer budget options.
Uvero Alto, further north, is more remote. Resorts are spread out along a wilder stretch of coast, and transfers from the airport are longer, which suits travelers who plan to stay on property.
Punta Cana proper and Cabeza de Toro sit close to the airport, with smaller hotels and a few resorts on calmer, reef-protected water.
Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean and has direct flights from many cities in the United States, Canada and Europe. Most resorts are 20 to 40 minutes away by road; the more remote resorts take longer. Transfers are often not included in a package, so check before you compare prices.
Before you fly, complete the free Dominican e-Ticket form for customs and migration, and do it again before your return flight. For most nationalities arriving by air, the tourist card fee is already built into the airline ticket.
Punta Cana is one of the destinations where booking the flight and hotel together most often works, because the hotel is the larger share of the cost, stays are typically a week, and package inventory is deep. Before you book, price the same flight and the same resort separately, and check four things that packages often leave out: airport transfers, checked bags, resort or tourism fees, and the cancellation terms. Our bundle calculator walks through the comparison.
Sargassum, the seaweed that can affect Caribbean beaches in the warmer months, is generally less of a problem here than on Mexico's Caribbean coast, but it does arrive some summers. Resorts clear their beaches daily.
Saona Island is part of Cotubanámá National Park and is reached by catamaran or speedboat from Bayahibe, about an hour and a half's drive south-west. Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the Americas, is a long but rewarding day trip of roughly two and a half to three hours each way. Closer to the airport, Cap Cana has cenote swimming and adventure parks for a half day off the beach.

December through April is the dry high season, with the most reliable weather and the highest prices. May to November is the low season and overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs 1 June to 30 November and peaks from mid-August to mid-October. Late April, May and November are the shoulder months where much of the value sits.
A valid passport for most visitors, plus the free electronic e-Ticket form for customs and migration, completed before arrival and again before departure. For most nationalities flying in, the tourist card fee is already included in the airline ticket. Entry rules can change, so check the current requirements for your passport before you fly.
Often, because the stay is typically a week at one all-inclusive resort and package inventory is very deep. Still compare the package total against the same flight and hotel booked separately, and check whether airport transfers, checked bags and resort fees are included before deciding.
